Sleepy little Bandipur with its pedestrianised cobbled streets was just what the doctor ordered after a dusty few days in busy Kathmandu.
After being lured into a cheap as cheap gets guest house for the night, we dropped our bags and headed out for our dinner. All that paddling made us pretty hungry for a good Dahl bhat.
Unbeknowing to us we'd arrived in the village for the Nepalese equivelant of Christmas and festivities were in full swing. Kids were singing and dancing, restaurants were alight with colourful tikka dust, and families were coming to celebrate together in the main square with the tourists. Everest beers all round for the tourists and Khukiri rum for the locals. We ordered a beer, a shisha and a big fat plate of mourish momos. We Tottered back drunk for the first time in a long time...Merry Tihar!
Set amongst the rice, lentil and potato terraces, we spent a day wandering between little villages, reading and sketching with a view, and ending the afternoon watching sunset over the Himalayas. Tihar festival was again in full swing tonight as amps pumped out local pop at full volume and groups of locals danced their dance in dark cobbled alleyways. The music drained the power and we were left enjoying the peaceful darkness to enjoy our dinner by candlelight. Getting home was interesting though. Should have brought the head torch!
