After a slightly delayed start, mainly due to needing a lie in, we collected our bikes, loaded up at the ATM on Nepalese Rupees and set out on our mountainous 3 day bike expedition.
Day one was a b*****! The first difficult bit was getting out of the dust and fumes of Kathmandu and on the right road with the use of a pretty crumby large scale map. We soon realised that what looked like a highway of the map was more often than not a dusty track. After a good hour of lostness and attempting to ask Nepalese people we had found the right main road. The next mission was to pad up our bike seats. A rather confused but helpful insulation shop man sold us a bit of karrimat stuff and helped us cut it up and tie it onto our seats. Success!
We got advised on exactly which roads to use and avoid from the Aussie lady who we hired our bikes off. Because she was slightly on the portly side we guessed she'd send us on nice gentle roads but Oh No! A large chunk of our afternoon was spent attempting to ride our highly suspensioned mountain bikes up a 5km hill where the motorbikes that passed us were just about making progress. Needless to say we gave our bums a rest and walked the majority.
The uphill was soon rewarded with an awesome bit of downhill track riding and a fair bit of uphill again to bring us into Kattike, where we stopped in the sunshine to enjoy our well earned butty with a view. The last 5km was an easy one as we jumped onto the local bus to Nagarkot as our bikes were hauled onto the roof to avoid being caught out in the dark.
Checked into a rather damp guesthouse with a pretty awesome view we braved the cold shower and celebrated day 1 with momos and chow mein.
