Today we met up again with who is now known as the most annoying bus driver ever to head up to Punakaiki and the famous Pancake Rocks. Sitting in the bus has its advantages of being able to see this beautiful country but it also means listening to the bus drivers constant waffling, the classic line being "that's the one!" I won't even try to pass on the jokes as it's a "you have to be there" one but take my word for it and to give us something to look forward to he'll be driving us on Sunday up to Nelson, we can't wait!
We arrived in Punakaiki around half two and was picked up by the hostel, another gem of a place. It is 3km out of town, town being a café, small shop and the information centre but it is a few minutes' walk to the beach and the lodge is nestled in the rainforest. It just has a nice atmosphere and really homely, there is also freshly baked bread and muffins of course we had to treat ourselves to a chocolate chip one!
As we are expecting more rain we took advantage of clear afternoon and walked up to the Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes, we caught it at low tide and it is a calm day so they aren't as impressive as they can be but still an awesome place. The name says it all the rocks are like pancakes stacked up and the water flows through with such force it sprays high in the air. We stood watching a couple of guys on a neighbouring beach kayak surfing, something else to try!
