Noyelles Travels 2017
Monday 1st May
We drove west on our way to Clevedon, in Somerset & had a few problems passing through Milton Keynes where several roads were closed & the Sat Nav became totally confused. Having made a few executive decisions we eventually found our way across to our destination in Yatton & were grateful to find that our motel room was excellent.
We drove into Clevedon but a heavy shower of rain confined us to the car, so gave up & had a meal in a nearby pub.
Tuesday 2nd May
Today we went first to Portishead, towards Bristol, where an old set of docks have been revamped as a yacht marina surrounded by a massive development of apartments. Because of the huge tidal rise & fall of the Bristol Channel, up to 25ft, the marina uses a lock to access the marina. We had a great coffee & watched as a boat entered the channel. Then on to Glastonbury, where we caught up with Dick's cousin, Sue & her husband, Ken, who were on a coach holiday in the area.
We wandered the town which must be one of the most unusual in England, full of aged flower people from the 70s & with streets lined with shops selling alternative paraphernalia. After a quick lunch we took a tour of the Abbey ruins before bidding goodbye to them.
We returned to Clevedon to see the pier, which stands high above the water & stretches into the Bristol channel. It is a fine example of a Victorian pier, which was visited by day trippers from Bristol in the early 1900s until the 60s.
Wednesday 3rd May
This morning we visited Tyntesfield House, a Victorian Gothic Revival pile of the National Trust built by a wealthy importer of Peruvian Guano fertiliser. It's a strange place, beautifully finished but not much to our taste.
From there we went to Bristol to catch up with Andy, an old school era friend of ***** who he hadn’t seen since before he left England in the late 60s. It was wonderful to catch up & to hear about his family & exploits as a singer & actor in various forms. We had a great lunch at a fine Italian cafe & eventually returned to Clevedon, just after we had met his lovely wife for the first time.
