Day 75, 17 September 2012, Essaouira - Today was the day for completions. We were fooled by the light this morning - it seemed dark for a much longer time than usual and even at 7 am town was still blanketed in grey clouds and a gentle sea mist. We woke up the night porter to unlock and let us out (sigh.... fire safety leaves a bit to be desired....). The streets seem 5 times as wide when not full of vendors, their wares, beggars and helpful urchin types, not to mention the roaming vendors of nuts, fruit and counterfeit perfume). Even though the streets were empty for all intents and purposes, we were still very careful not to get squashed by the Moroccan Ferrari which zoomed past us (pictured). We walked along the beach with a few other hardy souls and a few thousand seagulls enjoying morning ablutions and sardines au natural. The peace was incredibly welcome. We returned to breakfast and our day of conclusions - visited the art gallery shipping our painting home with an address and for a final look before the pieces were consigned to darkness for at least 10 months. We went for a stroll back towards the ramparts and another look at the amazing woodworkers of Essaouira. It was during these perambulations that we spied a closed door in a stone wall with some familiar art outside. Ahhh.... 'tis the atelier of the artist of the seascapes we had purchased. The opening hours on the closed door implied he was open.... as it turns out he was.... after our knocking woke him up. Great opportunity to meet the artist and see the studio. After lunch the budgetary urges kicked in and we resisted happy hour in favour of strolling back to the Riad for a snooze and a read (don't leave home without a Kindle). On our way out to dinner we concluded our final business in Essaouira - visiting Said (pron: Sigh-eed") to collect our custom made jewellery box. He put his heart and soul into making this in time for our departure and leaving his fragrant workshop we both decided we will miss Essaouira.
