Day 224, 13 February 2013, Venice, Italy. Had a fabulous breakfast at the glorious Hotel Belle Epoque and ventured out in daylight. (Well, Italian fabulous.... eggs and meat were involved. Also, strangely, a lot of mayonnaise... but they did have muesli and the juice was more than tangentially related to actual fruit!) We walked from our Canareggio end of town through to the Rialto bridge and explored the nearby market. We are still fascinated by the gondolas plying their trade and also at the thought of deliveries. And moving house. And it's all done by boats. Hmmm. Even saw a massive stuffed bear getting delivered by boat today! Having been up capering about till midnight last night, enjoying Carnevale, we had a kip in the afternoon. We went to hunt dinner in the evening and ended up in a locals pizza bar eating fabulously crispy, delicious and inexpensive pizza - with locals. We tried all the local restaurants, but the menu touristique usually leaves a lot to be desired... It's a set menu, with a set price, say €15 a head. Which sounds not too bad until the cover charge (€1 to €2) and the "service", such as it is, (12%) is added. Hence the pizza! And it was good. Tomorrow we're picking up a 3 day unlimited pass for the water buses - and then we're going to really start exploring!
