Now this was incredible! The red cliffs were popping and demanding photos!
We found a track off the road which went down by the river and, although rugged and beautiful we couldn't take a caravan in there to free camp. We had seen another red dirt track on our way back to the forest entrance, which beckoned us to investigate. With sun beating down, the views from this red/ochre landscape were amazing.
We had spotted a sign at the entrance to forest, that pointed the way to a lookout. What we
had seen already was breathtaking; surely nothing could surpass that!
How wrong we were.
After a short walk we found a metal scaffolding, stand-alone lookout tower. The view of the Murray, winding its way through bright ochre cliffs was gob-smacking!
I honestly cannot convey how magnificent it felt to be looking down upon this creation of nature. I hope the photos do it justice. We were both in total awe of this
place. The lookout was dedicated to the Headings family, early settlers in the area, and suitably named.
We drove back to the Renmark riverbank and Visitor Centre – informative but unremarkable. Apart from a tourism book that I spotted, on the region. There, on the front cover
was the view from the Headings Lookout. It is such an incredible view, there are postcards and other touristy pics depicting this glorious spot. I am so glad we found it and saw it up close and personal. An amazing memory!
And so on to the biggest, and privately owned, rose garden in Australia – 27 acres of big!
Not all the roses were in bloom but it was still quite pretty. We wandered around a bit and found a couple of lovely grassy areas set amongst fantastic old trees – no seating nfortunately which would have made it more inviting. I really preferred the great trees and other plantings they had. And fig trees – a whole roadway lined with fig trees.
We went to visit the Caffey brothers homestead and other tourist venues, but it appears they close on Tuesdays! So we went back to camp and started our pack up for travel the next day.
I found Renmark, unremarkable actually! The only really historic building was
closed, however the nearby Murtho forest – quite remarkable indeed!
