Hello! We've just had our first day in Kandy and it was beautiful! Much prettier than Colombo and less bombardment. We woke up at 9:30 and saw a whole troop of monkeys moving from tree to tree. Lots of them had babies. We had breakfast -tropical fruits, fried eggs and toast- and headed into town.
There is a big lake in the middle of the city that you can walk around and all the tourist attractions are dotted around the lake. We first went to the royal gardens. We sat under a tree and charlie was 30cm away from having his head hit from a falling avocado. We looked up to find a monkey sitting in the tree. This is clearly the place to go if you are a young person as every corner had some young couple canoodling! Charlie and I had to keep averting our eyes... But they were so numerous!
We walked down and stopped to watch a troop of monkeys. The locals must think we are very strange to be so intrigued by them. I find them so funny because it looks like they have little bowler hair cuts... The monkeys that is not the locals!
Then we went to a cemetery to learn how the colonists died.... Many by Cholera and malaria. Apparently the English ladies would bring the tropical flowers inside their homes in a vase of water where mosquitoes would lay eggs and spread the disease. They would morn their children's death for days keeping the body in the home and so it would spread to the other children as well. Charlie asked what happened to the bodies of srilankan people who died of cholera and the guide said they were sent to the jungle for the animals to eat.
There is also a temple here called the temple of the tooth which is famous for holding Buddhas tooth. However it's not been scientifically proven and some believe it is a bears tooth. Also, because we didn't have the correct clothing, we didn't go to it.
Tonight we are going to try a Sri lankan curry. You have to order it an hour before you come to dinner. The tomorrow we are going to Ella. The train leaves at 8:30 and lasts 7hours! But is famous for being the most beautiful train journey.... On to the next place!
