This is the last day of our holiday. We have spent the last four days in Bentota and then travelled up to Colombo yesterday by train for the last night in the ozo hotel. This is like a premier hotel but to us it feels very luxurious! It has a rooftop bar and infinite pool overlooking the city. We have paid for lat check out so we are spending the whole day sun bathing by the pool. I will attach some photos of the views. Anyway here is a update about our stay in Bentota.
Pier 88
We were recommended a great restaurant called pier 88 that we went to twice. The tables all face the lagoon area and you can see the sunset ( about 6:00 pm here ). Then they turn on the fairy lugs and it's very pretty. On the second night, we sat in a slightly different place of the restaurant. Charlie and I had noticed how many crows there were in Sri Lanka and At dusk, the sky filled with what we thought were crows. I walked to the deck to get a better view and discovered they were actually massive bats. Their bodies were very crisp like a thousand moving batman symbols . At the same time, white birds where gliding across the sky. A waiter came over noticing my intrigue and explained that one tree homes the White birds and at dawn and dusk they swap over with the owls. I said 'these are bats' and both Charlie and the waiter said 'no these are owls' which was very confusing but I was too distracted watching all the bats. It was a great moment and I put my glasses on to see it even clearer.
Sickness
Sadly, I have another paragraph about sickness! On the train to Bentota, Charlie was keen to try the train food that is regularly offered down the aisles. He chose some kind of samosa. It was very spicy and delicious. I didn't have any because it had onions in it. I said 'aren't you worried about getting sick again?' Charlie said it didn't matter now because he had 11 imodium insurance.
The next day we were at lunch and decided to take a walk down the beach. Charlie said he was feeling a little queazy and maybe we should walk back. At that exact moment I started to feel sick too. It came like sharp stabbing pains to my stomach. After a minute or two it was gone. A little while later it came back, but we were already half way home. The third time it happened I started to feel like I might be sick but I couldn't tell Charlie because when you feel nauseous it can be a self fulling prophesy. Locals were asking if I needed water or to sit down. We were metres away from the house and I stopped with more pain. Charlie was keen to get back knowing how close we were. Sadly, I turned to the gutter and was sick. A local man on a bike asked if he could help... But there's not much you can do. We did manage to get home and I carried on being poorly for a few hours. We didn't eat much for 20ish hours. The next night we went to pier 88. I debated the shellfish or the chicken. We went for the shellfish platter to share. I reasoned 'you don't come to Bentota, next to the sea, and have chicken'... Which is funny because the next night I did have the chicken and it was delicious....
Reading
Due to a bit of illness, we've spend quite a bit of time chilling out. I read the book she said/ he said which I didn't think was that great because I'd predicted the big twist at the beginning. Then I read behind closed doors which was much better and I was much more curious about the ending. Now I'm reading the girl with the dragon tattoo.
Home
So tonight we fly at 10:00 back to Dubai and then on to London. Charlie has gone for a shorter transfer time of 1.30hrs between so we should land at 7:00 am on Wednesday.
It's been a great trip. Sri Lanka has widened our minds and halved our bodies!
