So today was glacier-day, and what an adventure! Got up early and got through breakfast as quickly as possible! Set off from Reykjavik heading for Husafell, which is the starting point to head up the Longjokull glacier. Fairly soon after leaving Reykjavik, the traffic thinned right down and there was hardly anyone else on the road - the snow on the roads varied considerably, from non at all to a metre in from each side of the road.
Got to the Into the Glacier centre and got wrapped up warm as it was already minus 3 there before we started up. The vehicle we went in was an 8-wheeled, British, ex rocket-launder from the 1980's converted into a massive 38-seat snow and mountain climber - an amazing vehicle!
Climbed about 1,500 mètres til we got to the top - THEN the fun really began! In 2014, the Into The Glacier company excavated a half a kilometre tunnel right into the glacier and the days tour was to explore it!! The tunnel walls were lit up, and you could see the layers of show ice and compacted grit like rings on a tree. There were various "rooms" in the tunnel complex including a little chapel - Theo was in sitting-down mood so he went in the baby backpack for half the tour..!
The drive back down was much slower as the weather closed in but was a fantastic trip!
