Today we left Akureyri and headed for Myvatn against the backdrop of Yellow Weather Warnings from the Iceland weather service and an e-mail from the travel agents warning us too!
We set off after breakfast - we crossed over the fjord and started the climb into the mountains. There was some wind and lots of snow on the slopes but the roads were clear. After we'd finished the descent we were soon at Godafoss, (the waterfall of the gods...). We definitely needed the crampons here as the pathways were very slippery - we saw the falls from one side then went to the other side to get a better view. They were spectacular, with thousands of gallons of water a second gushing over their crescent shape - the snow had started to melt, and there were chunks of ice tumbling in the eddies too.
We dragged ourselves away, and headed for the hotel - it was so windy we had trouble opening the hotel door but we checked in to our large family room. We had found something that revelled in the name of the Cowshed Cafe and headed for it. It was a working dairy farm that had accommodation and whose milking shed was adjacent to the cafe, and you could watch the cows feeding and being milked! We went into the cowshed itself to watch and Theo loved it!
He was getting right up to them, and feeding them by hand! Was wonderful - he just busied himself doing it, and was quite unfazed when they nudged him! Very endearing!
