We left Liverpool after a busy breakfast, every man and his dog was there lol. Driving through the spectacular lake district. It is so beautiful with the forest, mountains and of coarse the lakes. We stopped for a photo opportunity of the largest lake in England, Windermere it's 10.5 miles long, and has a lovely little town to go with it. In this area of England is where king Henry the 8th's sixth and last wife was from. His first wife he wanted to divorce as she could not produce a son, so he asked the pope several times but to no luck, the pope would not grant him the divorce so he said b***** you, left the church and started his own up, the church of England protosis, he made himself the priest and granted himself the divorce lol! He was not a very nice man as he had two of his wives be headed because he thought they were having an affair. His third wife was the love of his life though, she gave him one son but died shortly after giving birth.
This area of England has these funny sheep called Herdwick sheep. They are born black and go grey as they get old lol.
Before we crossed over into Scotland we stopped in this quaint town of Grasmere, this is where the famous poet William Wordsworth lived and got a lot of his inspiration from. I can certainly see why. We checked out his grave, think I might be a bit of a weird O as I like wandering and taking photos of old grave yards, I think they have a lot of character lol! We also tried there famous ginger bread, I liked it but Boof didn't and tried there mint cake. The cake is like this thin white pure sugar slice that is only as thick as 2mm, hickers take it with them for an energy fix.
Here is a poem from William-
THE DAFFODILS; OR, I WANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD
by: William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
WANDERED lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of the bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company
I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
The first town we come to in Scotland is Gretna Green, this town was well known for runaway couples to wed here as in England the legal age for marriage was 21 and in Scotland it was only 16. You didn't need a license to wed a couple so majority of couples were wed by a black smith as this town was a small working village and the black smiths would be the first thing they would come to. This all had to happen in a hurry as the father in law would be angrily on there tail lol! We also tried some whisky, now there was a problem, we liked em all couldn't choose just one lol!
As we drive through Scotland on our way to Glasgow the scenery has changed, it has more rolling green hills rather than mountains, wind farms and dairy cows, but still lots of sheep.
In this particular area of Scotland, the low land was mainly run by two families, the Maxwell's and the Johnstons. as it goes, these two families did not get along and if they weren't stealing sheep and cattle from the English, they were stealing it from each other. Now if anyone from the Maxwell family caught any of the Johnstons stealing from them, they would administrator what was called the lockerbelick, this was taking a sharp razor and running it from ear to ear. Ouch, im glade this doesn't happen these days as I'm sure I would have stollen a sip from Auz's drink at some stage, lol!!
We are stay in Glasgow, didn't get out and about here just had a group dinner then had a rest. It has been a great day though.
