New Years Day involved a long lie in. The boys had gone on clubbing after midnight and came home pretty late, Kelly and I were both tired so we watched movies while the boys slept. Today our plan was just to get to Shanghai by bus, have a dinner at a restaurant Paul loved and sleep in our hotel room.Travelling to Shanghai by bus was only a two hour affair and the bus was pretty empty so we sat in a row and chatted all the way there. My first impression of the journey was the sheer size of the industrial park that has made Suzhou such an important area. When they decide to do something in China they just go for it. There's no planning permission or anything the government just choose a space and plan a design then move anything in their way. The SIP is tens of kilometres long and is so very organised. It is obvious that if there is going to be a new eastern superpower China will be a big contender. In comparison to India where everything is organic and grows up around old buildings and cows China is totally the opposite. There is a plan of the SIP and the whole thing is just plonked down exactly as the plan. Apparently the 4 lane roads were built right at the start, even though there were no cars to use them. The infrastructure is so well designed and functional.Shanghai itself was a mass of neon and skyscrapers. It was like landing on another planet to be inside the roads and streets of such an amazingly modern city. The hotel was posh and there were showers with apparently endless hot water, which was a big luxury! The Japanese restaurant was almost empty when we arrived at 8pm. Pauls suggested we do the buffet, it was 120RMB each for all you can eat and drink...so we ate and drank all we could for 3 hours! There was a puree potato salad to start then we just picked off the menu everything we fancied. I decided to eat fish even though I have been mostly vegetarian during the travels. The salmon was delicious and Paul showed me how to mix the wasabi in with my soy sauce to make a dip that blew your head off and made your nose run! There were deep friend prawns, battered vegetables, every sauce you can imagine and more. We also drank all the warm sake we could manage as well as coca cola, even the drinks were included in the price and we certainly got our money's worth!
