Hello!
I know I haven't not written and entry for a while but thats because we have been camping on Fraser Island for 3 days in the wilderness!(well thats what it felt like anyway!)
We got back from the trip this evening after 3days and 2 nights camping on the Island in a 4 Wheel Drive. The trip was really good fun although we did have a few hiccups along the way such as getting the car stuck in sand in the boling heat and managing to roll into the back of another car as we were leaving the supermarket. (We weren't even on the Island yet!!) That was pretty annoying as we lost our insurance money for the tiniest bit of damage to the car.Arrgh!
Anyway, thats the drama out of the way. Aside from that, the trip was amazing. It didn't realise quite how much freedom you had before going on the trip but you pretty much get given a big 4WD and left to drive around the island for 3 days. We had a really nice group aswell, we all got on really well which I think makes a big difference.
As soon as we got off the ferry and started driving on the island we realised we were going to be in for a bumpy few days. I have accumulated quite a few bruises! It was quite funny though, although I dont think we all though that when we had been driving for about 5 hours after getting pretty lost and going the wrong way down a one way.(Who knew that there were lanes on a narrow sandy track!) So, we eventually found our campsite and managed to get the tents up just before dark. We also had our first encounter with a dingoe. It was pretty scary at first as someone shone a torch round and it was right behind us. We soon got used to this over the 3 days though.
We had a really fun second day after very little sleep and realising that I am not a camper! We drove on the beach for the first time which was really cool and a lot smoother than inland. It was really cool to drive right by the see and watch dolphins jumping about in the water. The water looked so inviting as it was really hot. However, after I was informed that sharks swin around the island, it soon looked less appealing!
Anyway, we drove to some 'Champagne pools' where we went for a swim. It was so nice! And we found out that they were called 'Champagne pools' as the little barnacles on the side of the rocks shoot out water when you press them. This provided quite a bit of entertainment ( I think the heat was getting to us!). We then made our way up to a rock formation called 'Indian Heads' and managed to see a whale along the way. Im sure it was waving to us! The walk up to the top was pretty hot and steep but it was so worth it. The view from the top was incredible. We could see all over the island and across the sea. It looked so beautiful. We were hoping to see some sharks but had no luck. We did see some turtles though. We the decided to set up our camp before dark after the night before and spent the rest of the atfernoon at a nearby creek.
That evening, we sat out eating, drinking and looking at all the stars as the sky was so clear. We were, however scaring ourselves about all the creepy noises we could here. It was so dark, I think we jumped at every noise! Although, Im sure all the wine didn't help!
Before making our way to the ferry, we drove to Lake Mackenzie for a swim. I even had a go at driving the car along the beach! It was quite fun but a lot harder than it looked. I didn't want to scare people either. We eventually got to the lake though after getting stuck in the sand for what felt like hours in the heat! The Lake was really beautiful as the water was so green and despite the weather going a bit colder we were all determined to go for a swim.
So, after a very fun but eventful trip we got the ferry back to Hervey Bay ready to get the 13hr overnight bus to our next destination, Airlie Beach for our Whitsundays saling trip. I can't wait to have a shower and sleep in a normal bed!!
Bye!!
