Had a day and half in the mining city of potosi. Its at an altitude of 4070 meters and the airs getting a bit thin for my liking! still its not too bad and its only going to get worse as we travel into the salt flats and a peak of 5900 meters! This little city is built around the silver and other minerals in the nearby hill. The mine is operated purely manually with thousands of people spending ages down there for very little money. Made me feel extremely lucky. We took gifts for the miners of coca leaves cigarettes, 90% alcohol, dynamite and crackers! Did a 2 hours tour in the depths and it was plenty for me, dusty and gas smells. Apparently in the history of the mine over 8 million people have died down there. It has been going since colonial times however. The place is quite nice and the area is beautiful but i can t get most of my photos up beacue the internet facilities are nt great. Will be out of touch for a few days until La Paz i think. Hope your all good, nick x
