Day 1
Met at 6.30 am for our Fraser Island briefing which explained the dangers of the island - including driving and dingoes! Seperated into groups - in our group we had an irish and english couple and then an odd boy from florida who turned up drunk as it was his 21st party the night before. Headed to pick up our 4x4, signed our lives away on some contracts and then packed up the jeep ready for our camping adventures. After stopping at the supermarket for the next couple of days supplies and also the bottle shop for our malibu we caught the ferry across to fraser island. Once on the island the roads (or should we say sand tracks) were pretty wild and dangerous and we soon realised that corners had to be taken slowly to avoid tipping over! Our first stop was Lake Wabby which was awesome - we walked to the look out point before heading down to the lake for a swim. Some guys were sandboarding down the bank into the lake and we decided we wanted a go so politely asked if we could lend their board for a turn. This hill was really steep and faster than it looked - we both managed to hit the water injury free. After leisurely swimming around in the lake for a few hours we hiked back up the hill to make sandwiches before heading down to Eastern beach and then up towards Indian Head. This is where we took control in the front seats and had a go at driving on the sand. As there was 4 other jeeps we all decided to pitch up tents at the same place - which ended up being behind a sand dune on the beach. Arrived here pretty late so had to quickly learn how to pitch a tent (with some help from the guys - they do come in useful for something!). Tonights tea was bbq which went down very well along with half a bottle of malibu. Sat chatting under the stars with the other 32 people before stubbling to our tent. Unfortunatly we drew the short straw and had to share with Alex who was a little strange but harmless.
Day 2
Woke up at 6.30 in a pool of sweat - very hot in these tents. Had breakfast and then didnt have much choice other than chilling on the beach for the morning because the tide was in so couldnt drive along the beach. Unfortunalty we couldnt go in the sea either as its full of deadly stingers and the breeding ground for tiger sharks. At 12 we headed to Indian head look out which was amazing and then along to the Champagne pools to cool off. Had to turn back on ourselves as we couldnt drive any further up this beach, on route back we stopped at Eli creek, a shipwreck and coloured sands. Camped again just next to the sea with a few of the other groups, had spag bol for tea and the rest of our malibu - yum yum! Tonight the stars were so bright they lit up the sky - never seen as many in our lives. Also the full moon reflecting on the water was a spectacular sight. Whilst getting ourselves ready for bed, which included finding a secret loo stop, Charlotte was brushing her teeth and heard some rustling behind her so turned round to see two dingos creeping up on them. As the signs say 'walk away calmly' she headed straight over to Nicky to fill her in on our new guests before we took cover before the rest of the group. These dingos were hungry and dug up the remains of the spag bol, opened eskie's and stole bin bags full of food. We slipped into our sleeping bags and cuddled up to each other not long after this encounter.
Day 3
Again we were woken up by the scorching temperature, packed our tents and jeep up and headed off for Central station which was off the beaten track. Nicky was driving along this deserted track when we approached a rather large hill - despite her putting her foot down on the accelerator we some how got our suspension hitched on a plank of wood and were stuck for a good 30minutes (oops!). After this we reached Central station and had a walk around the rainforest. Next stop was Lake Mckenzie which was the most beautiful lake ever seen - white sands and clear blue water. As we were feeling energetic we swam across the lake to an island - Alex joined us and nearly drowned on the way there - he was so shocked that once we had explored the island we swam straight back. Later we got the ferry back to Hervey bay just before a thunder storm hit! lucky us. Beans on toast for tea and a much appreaciated shower followed by a sleep in our comfy bed!
