Day 2 saw us up pre-dawn for a day packed with sights. The first sight was a flat tyre on our jeep, which turned out to be the first of many problems with it but more of that later.
First actual stop was the ghost town of San Antonio. This was a mining town of some 1,200 people that was abandoned a few decades ago when the mines closed. A pretty spooky place especially first thing in the morning. It is now the home of many viscachas, a kind of greenish rabbit with a long tail.
Soon afterwards we entered the Reserva Nacional Eduardo Avaroa. The rest of the day saw prairies, deserts, lakes, volcanos, hot springs (which we didn't go in due to the freezing wind) and finished at the Laguna Colorado, the waters of which are red and home to thousands of flamingos.
A highlight was the Geisers Sol De Mañana. A couple of high pressure steam vents and many pools of bubbling mud - all at 5,000m. The vents are impressive, but the mud pools amazing. They are kind of like bubbling open sores on the earth's surface. Think the Bog of Eternal Stench from Labyrinth. You can wander around them freely, and the ground is far from secure. UK health and safety would have a lot to say!
Night in a chilly shared room at 4,300m, but slept OK. Mostly due to the wine we consumed.
As we went to bed the bonnet of the jeep was open....
