The BIG day...a big push is needed from both of us if we want to reach Everest Base Camp. A two hour trek to Gorak Shep then a 2.5 hour trek to EBC. We forgot the route, the terrain, the scenery etc as we were so focused on making it and WE MADE IT!
We finally reached the foot of Sagarmatha, Chomolungma or Mount Everest as we know it. The tallest mountain in the world standing at 8848m and we had reached its base, it was a defining moment as it puts into realisation just how serious it is to summit it. Both of us were absolutely elated to have made it as it proved that you can do anything if you put your mind to it regardless of fitness, illness etc.
We took the usual touristy photos and took a moment to watch the Khumbu icefall which has taken many climbers and Sherpa's lives as its one of the most risky parts of climbing Everest. (see photo). From EBC, you cannot see the summit of Everest and as a mountain writer (Ed Douglas) once said 'Everest is like a grossly fat man in a room full of beautiful women'. (Ama Dablam and Nuptse are my personal favourites).
Funnily enough, as we were on a natural high the walk back to Gorak Shep was a breeze.
