After passing through to Jodhpur on the way to Jaisalmer from Udaipur, Helen was adamant that we were not staying there but Nick wanted to so after Jaisalmer we made a one night stop in Jodhpur.
Jodhpur is known as the Blue City and is famous for its mighty Mehrangarh, a muscular fort towering over the city. We got a early morning bus from after watching the sun rise from our hotel roof top so we were in Jodhpur for lunchtime, on arrival we got a tuktuk to shop around for somewhere to stay and settled for Hotel Haveli as they agreed to our price of 500 rupees, (£6.66). Driving through Jodhpur we could not see why it was called the blue city as nothing was blue apart from the occasional building. (Apparently, the blue paint is meant to repel insects but Helen found out later that it definitely doesn't repel mosquitoes as she got bitten alive!).
As we were both starving after having no breakfast we headed straight out for some lunch and straight to the fort towering over the city, after a very steep walk up the hill which left us both out of breath we were delighted that they let us in the fort and museum for free. The Mehrangarh stands 120m above Jodhpurs skyline, and is certainly one of the most magnificent forts we have seen to date. While Jaisalmer's fort speaks cuteness, Jodhpurs fort certainly speaks power. The view from the Mehrangarh confirmed why the city is called the blue city, it certainly was a sea of blue buildings from the distance. We then wandered the city surrounding the clock tower and chilled out before Nick treated Helen to a slap up meal at one of the best restaurants in the city.
It was certainly evident when we arrived that it was one of the best as it was chock full of western holiday goers and there was a queue for a table. We indulged in chicken tandoori and really enjoyed the views of the fort, clock tower and Umaid Bhawan Palace in the distance.
After a good nights sleep we caught a dawn bus to Puskhar for the camel fair which is meant to be an extravaganza!
