That's not a picture of Mount Cook! There isn't one on here and I still can't seem to upload any!
We arrived in Mount Cook quite late in the afternoon. We were originally just going to stop to have a look bu there was a little village there so we decided to stay overnight in the YHA. There was a glacier in the area but the road to it was closed. We drove round the closed sign though to see how far we could get! The answer was not very far! There was a 4by4 in front of us which managed a bit better than we did but the road suddenly became very icy and although we had snow chains for the tyres we decided it wasn't the best idea to give it a go!
It was quite cloudy so you couldn't actually see the top of Mount Cook but we went for a little walk down Hooker Valley to see what we could see. It was really icy in places but it was a pretty little walk with a river and rope bridge at the end! It was quite a scary swinging rope bridge actually! We didn't walk too far as it started to get dark quite early.
We went out for a meal in a bar there and were practically the only people in there! Apparently there are only 1 million residents in the south island so there weren't many people around anywhere!! We had a nice meal in the bar and were hoping to stay for some drinks but we got kicked out at around 9.30pm!!
The following day we drove from Mount Cook to Wanaka. We made a few stops on the way across. One being Peter's Lookout which was a beautiful lookout over lakes and mountains and we stopped at another lake a little further on. There was no one on the roads or at the lake so it was really peaceful. We also stopped at the Clay Cliffs. We thought we were following signs to them but it turned out we weren't really paying attention and drove straight past the sign and drove for around 20 minutes out of the way. We found what we thought were the Clay Cliffs and were really disappointed. The first thing we'd been disappointed in in New Zealand. Driving back we saw the sign leading us to them! We follwed it in the right direction and came across them! They really weren't disappointing! They kind of look like they should be on the moon! They're very cool!
We arrived in Wanaka quite late that afternoon just as it was getting dark.
