Yesterday we left NYC and caught an Amtrak train up to Niagara Falls. The journey is meant to take nine and a half hours but actually took eleven and a half as the train driver didn't seem to be in any rush; we kept drifting to a standstill while we waited for signals to turn green or for freight trains to pass.
It wasn't as bad as it sounds though - you get tonnes of legroom and the seats are massive. Plus the scenery is much more interesting than the view from most trains in London.
And it was definitely worth it as the Falls are amazing! We did all the touristy things on the US side today: Maid of the Mist (wow), Cave of the Winds, all the lookout points, the train around the park and the short film about the history of Niagara (hilariously over the top; we were both crying with laughter by the time it finished at the lack of subtlety and the cliches, but still worth seeing). It was lovely and sunny which is good because we were soaked through several times - the attractive ponchos they keep giving you only do so much to protect you from the spray!
Chilling in the hostel now with a beer -and a game of Upwords. So rock and roll.
Planning to head to the Canadian side of the Falls tomorrow...
