After 16 hours on a bus we arrived in Buenos Aires, which we instantly fell in love with, despite the 30 degree dorm room with smelly boys! BA is like the Europe of South America, the buildings and plaza´s are amazing and the main street that goes through the centre is 20 lanes wide.
We dropped our bags and headed straight out to do some shopping as we have been waiting for 9 months to upgrade our clothes and get rid of all the hiking attire. Our first attempts were a little blow to our ego´s as most of the shops in Palermo didn´t have anything in our size ... yes maybe due to all the ice cream, facturas (danishes), empanadas and dulce de leche (caramel that they put in and on everything)! We realised that all the girls in Buenos Aires were tiny tiny tiny ... and so were the clothes. It seems that in BA there is no excuse for not looking gorgeous (well, we´ve heard they have the most amount of plastic surgery in the world).
Buenos Aires is known for its night life and heading out at midnight on a Wednesday night the bars are just starting to fill up. There is something to do every night of the week. We ventured out to watch some locals dance the tango which was amazing, although we would pretend to be in deep conversation whenever one of the old dudes walked past looking for a dance partner ... tango is not something that should be attempted without lessons ... or natural rhythym!
We were also lucky to have some locals show us about, Herman and Carolina who we met in Peru became our food guides. Carolina cooked us some great pizza then took us out to the best ice cream in BA, then they took us to a traditional all you can eat Parrilla (meat grill), even de gave it a go .. although she was more of a fan of the salad than the huge hunks of meat & offal that were served to the table. On our last night together we dined on cheese, meats and beer from Patagonia (and then were taken to the second best ice cream in BA!) In Argentina they love their meat and ice cream!
