On the 2nd of January we jumped in our Corsa hire car and headed north to explore the lakes district and to join the masses of Argentinians on holidays. We camped by some amazing lakes which were cool but refreshing! Nic tried her hand at a little fishing but the fish were luckier than her.
We drove across the border into Chile to a beautiful town called Pucon which has the amazing back drop of a massive volcano that has snow at the top, little did we know that that the volcano can hide behind clouds for days before showing it´s grandeur. We were lucky enough to see it but after a failed attempt to climb to the top we decided to move on and head back when we did not have the car. We headed back through the Chilean lakes district and spent a couple of days lazying by the lakes in Argentina before heading back to Bariloche for one last Saturday night before crossing back over in to Chile ... I think we are up to about 10 border crossings by now .. to go to Pucon (again). We spent the afternoon Hidrospeeding which is like whitewater rafting without the raft, you get your own little floating device and rip down the rapids, it was WILD!
Quite expecting to wait around for the Villarrica volcano to come out and shine we were blessed with perfect weather on the second day and were able to climb to the top (2847metres). The sulphur smell burnt your nostrils and you could get close enough to look down the crater although it just looked like a black hole.
The fun part of the day was coming down ... which was on our butts like sledding with no toboggon. It was loads of fun.
