Instead of spending our last weekend in Argentina in BA, we decided to head to a small town 3 hours north called Gualeguaychu where they hold a carnival parade every weekend during January & February.
We arranged to stay in a room at the house of a lovely couple, Amalia & Omar, who made us feel so welcome (even though neither of them spoke any English, and our Spanish is still pretty limited). That night they drove us around town to show us the sights ... we watched tango dancing in the plaza, they introduced us to everyone at the local markets, took us to see the carnival floats, and then they shouted us icecream at 1:30am for Nic´s birthday.
Saturday was spent at a riverside beach that had a DJ and a sandy dance floor with overhead sprinklers to keep you cool while dancing in bikini´s & boardies. When the sun went down we headed back to the house for some champagne and at 11pm we went to watch the actual carnival parade which was sensational ... and it didn´t finish until 4am! There were about 12 massive floats filled with dancers & musicians, and over 22,000 people turned up to watch from the grandstands including families with kids. The atmosphere was great, and we now can´t wait to experience carnival in Brasil!
