Kenmare, Ireland
Saturday was changeover day. We got packed up and bid a fond farewell to Rolf's and Baltimore. Our next destination was Kenmare in Co Kerry. Before leaving, we had a look around the small castle overlooking Baltimore harbour which detailed the history of the pirates that thwarted but also made the village rich in centuries gone by. The highlight for Betsy was a real parrot in the corner of the room ... Or carrot as Betsy called it!!
We stopped at Bantry House for lunch on the way to Kenmare. We skipped the house but explored the gardens and had a bite to eat.
Leaving Bantry, we drove through the Cork and Kerry mountains which was truly spectacular - a landscape that is hard to describe. So remote and ancient, you could sense the tales these old hills could tell. Included in the drive are several tunnels carved into the rock of the mountains - it added to the sense that man had invaded this space that would rather be left alone. You could see why it was known for its highwaymen and bandits.
In contrast, Kenmare is a colourful and attractive tourist town sitting on the river. We collected our keys and headed to our cottage. An old worker's cottage on the road running parallel to the high street. It was lovely and spacious and once we had child proofed it a little bit (glass topped nested tables were the first to go!) it was perfect for what we needed. We settled in, got the kids to bed and Ed went out and got takeaway. We watched The Van - a Roddy Doyle film based around Italia 90. We hadn't seen it before - and it was brilliant - so so funny!!
