Sunday arrived and to say it was not a great day weather wise was a bit of an understatement - it rained, and rained and then it rained some more!! We had a lazy indoor day.
Kenmare is in the south east side of The Ring of Kerry, famous for it's stunning scenery. We weren't going to see much of it today!! We headed out to Sneem (great name) in the early evening for a run out and went into a local pub. The town looked deserted when we pulled in, but the pub was hopping - it definitely had a Bank holiday Sunday feeling (Ireland's August bank hol is the first weekend not the last). It was slowly filling up with an 'afters' party - the party the day after an Irish wedding - an institution in Ireland, and often as big a session as the wedding. The time and effort wedding guests make in Ireland is in a different league to England. A lot of the girls had paid to have their hair and make up done for the afters as well as the wedding, and there was a lot of shiny stiletto platform shoes and sequinned dresses on display. I know I'm a bit of a scruff but it's all a bit OTT for me, I prefer a face not spoiled by beauty. A relaxed couple of drinks were had and we left the wedding crowd to party and headed home.
Monday brought visitors - Siobhan, my auntie, and Andrew, her son and my Godson. Before they landed with us in the afternoon, we took Betsy to Kennedy's pet farm which was tipped as a great place for young kids on the internet and in guides.
In fairness, Betsy did enjoy it, but Ed and I did not. It was a lot of animals roaming free and the playground was homemade, rickety and none too safe in my opinion! They had some old school buses that they had repurposed with tables and chairs and you were apparently welcome to eat your lunch there. They were filthy! Insects and spiders everywhere plus the roaming goats were particularly fond of hanging out on the buses!! We got out of there pretty quickly!
Siobhan and Andrew joined us in the afternoon. We had an early bird in one of the (many) Kenmare pubs and strolled back to the house. By 8ish, we were well settled - both babes were sleeping, me and Bon put on our PJs and opened the wine and Ed and Andrew embarked on an evening of champ man!
The next morning, we split into 2 camps - Ed and Andrew went off and played Footgolf - an 18 hole golf course with footballs instead of golf clubs and ball! Me and Bon went to Killarney National Park with the kids and spent a happy few hours wandering around. We parted ways at the park after a really enjoyable 24 hours - good company, conversation and much laughter. Betsy and Patrick were utterly spoilt by Bon and Andrew, who had quickly established himself as Betsy's best friend and had her giggling non-stop.
