alex's most Excellent adventures!
Hello everyone, the last time i wrote i was about to visit the Phi Phi Islands! Well i did and they were spectacular not to mention a real party place. They are probably the most beautiful islands I have seen in Thailand. Surrounded with turquoise waters lapping up against white cliffs and sandy beaches, this was pure paradise.
We spent around a week here of which we went kayaking and sunbathed when it didn't rain! On the island the tsunami devastation was still apparant, however there is lots of work going on to re build and in the main part of the island the infrastructure remains, with populated bars, restaurants and shops with people almost oblivious to what has happened.
While here it rained for the first 3 days, where there wasn't much else to do other than eat and watch a movie. At one point we went on a movie marathon and watched anchor man, old skool and wedding crashers, it was awesome! When it didn't rain we went on a snorkling trip to neighbouring phi phi Ley island. Here we got to sit and relax on the most famous beach in the world. The beach surrounded by a wall of rock, the beach where Leaonardo Di Caprico once sat! Yes the famous site from the movie and book the 'beach', the only let down was the lack of marijuana fields! Here we also did some cliff jumping - v. scary!
From Phi Phi we then left Thailand for Malaysia and the Perhentians islands! These were to be remote and a contrast to the islands of Thailand. However it was here that we had our best time. We stayed on the smaller of the two Pehentian islands known as Perhentian Kecil. This was the "budget" travelers hang out with hardly any development on the island, no roads and no cars. The bars, restaurants and accommodation were basically wooden shacks, and you would often see huge monitor lizards walking around sharing the beach with you.
Here we met an awesome group of people (Amy, James, Lisa, Lauren, Jim) who we spent six days sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving with. Every night we shared was a drunken hilarious night where we all clicked as a group. Alcohol?? In Malaysia I hear you say! Yes Malaysia being a muslim country means alcohol is pretty much illegal. There are no official "bars" here although every restaurant pretty much illegally sells alcohol at night. Come night time everything seemed to focus around one restaurant called Palm Tree. It's where all the local dive masters and backpackers go to drink the local home brew named 'monkey juice.' It was here that we had some quality nights drinking, singing and dancing on the beach.
Other events here included me doing a wreck dive, and snorkling/swimming next to a turtle! Was amazing! Next stop is 'Taraman Negara'. A national park in Malaysia with the world's longest canopy walks!
