alex's most Excellent adventures!
Hi everyone, hope your all enjoying the summer back in the UK. I hear its actually a good one and with Wimbledon and the world cup on it surely it couldn't get any better!
Well as you know I haven't wrote for quite a while (since Cambodia) as we've been quite busy in the south of Thailand. Actually that's a lie, we've mostly been chilling out on the islands, sunbathing on the beach's, drinking fruit shakes and eating pad tai all day, but all this can make you very lazy! Since Cambodia woodsy and I spent a couple of days in Bangkok shopping on the Khao san road and again exploring the randomness of Bangkok's nightlife! From here we got an overnight sleeper train down to the south of Thailand to meet up with woodsy's friends (who had left Bangkok a day before us) and were now on the island of Koh Lanta!
We were told this island was supposedly one of the quieter islands in Thailand, and when we arrived we figured they weren't wrong. With it being rainy season on the west coast of Thailand, the island was in low season and thus was pretty deserted. However, we found a nice bay and stayed in a beach bungalow spending our time sun bathing, playing Frisbee, snorkeling and playing football against the locals (Eng Vs THAI). Come night time we would sit in the bar overlooking the bay and chill out with a few beers and watch the fire show the barmen would put on! This included a staff (stick) on fire which would be spun around and thrown in the air and caught again, but all at an increadibly fast speed that it looked an awesome firey haze! Other events here included hiring motorbikes for the day and exploring the island, as well as some well funny nights singing and playing guitar and bongos with the barmen! All in an Irish accent (don't ask!)
From Koh Lanta we headed back to mainland and to the beaches of Krabi. Have to say the beaches here were spectacular. The beaches are on the mainland but are only accessible by long tail boat! This is because they lie at the bottom of some spectacular huge white cliffs that make this area a favourite site for rock climbers! This would also be woodsy mates last day in Thailand before returning to the UK (unluckies boys). Woodsy and I however would stay on another day and indulged in some sea Kayaking and attended a reggae night on one of the neighbouring beaches.
After Krabi we caught our boat and bus to the island of Koh Pha Ngan with attention firmly focused on the beginning of the world cup and the infamous full moon party held here. If you've haven't heard about it then its 10 times better than any tacky 18-30's holiday you could go on (i.e., Kavos, Magaluf etc). Every month (yes you've guessed it on the night of a full moon) thousands travellers dance the night away on a huge white sandy beach to the numerous DJ banging out their sets of hard trance, Psy Goa, and D&B etc! The attendance can be anything from 5000 to 20000 people all who are fuelled up on cheap drink, wearing nothing more than boardies or bikinis and glow paint. It's the best beach party you could attend to.
Another part of the full moon party is the notorious lethal buckets on sale here. For 150 baht (around 2 pounds) you get a bottle of rum, vodka or barcardi with a mixture of red bull and coke. This is then all put into one of those buckets that was designed to make sand castles! After one of these i can tell you feel the effects, after two your set and ready to party for hours!
After the full moon we spent a relaxing few days on another part of Koh Pa Ngan which turns out to be a very beautiful island despite its party town of Hat Rin. We also gained another fellow traveller in the way of a guy all the way from the US of A and the town of Boston. This has meant the banter has been flying and woodsy and I have been ripping it out of the yank. However, he given as good as he has got and found the fact we English constantly say the word "well" to emphasise everything and anything, really amusing ! I.e. that's 'well' good, shes 'well' fit etc etc.
With the yank (mikey) in toe, we are now on the neighbouring island of Koh Tao! Koh Tao is world renowned for its diving and with over 100 diving schools here it's not only the place to come to learn to scuba dive but also the cheapest in the world. After a 4 day course I've just completed my PADI open water scuba diving and am now able to dive anywhere in the world. It really was an amazing experience and I couldn't get over how clear the water is here! The visibility around Koh Tao is again what makes it one of the best diving sites in the world. At times the visibility under water upto 25 m and I was lucky enough to see a turtle, and numerous schools of fish and well as some rays and squid.
I've had an awesome time here, and the fact the world cup has been on has made it all the better. In Koh Pha Ngan we watched the England games on a huge screen on the beach with hundreds of others england fans. In Koh Tao we have been watching every night in the bar with fellow dive buddies we have met throughout the day. It's a great atmosphere too as there are so many people from all over the world. We had some awesome chants for the Swedes as did them for us, but it was all conducted in a friendly manner!
Right tonight we head for the island of Koh Phi Phi where the beach with Leonardo Di Capprio was filmed! However we hear due to it being rainy season that the island is more quite than usual! Oh well just sounds like they need a couple of Brits to liven things up! Will let you all know what it's like when we arrive!
COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!
