Montevideo - Day 13 - 12/10/2012 (Friday)
Another early start and guess what???? Another bus!! Only 6.5 hours this time though. Sarah and I got the front seats again looking out of the view. Although we both fell asleep for the first 3 hours.
We arrived into Montevideo (the capital of Uruguay) about 1 and jumped in taxis to the hotel. Checked in and went straight out. We walked to the old quarter through a mixture of really old and grand architecture to modern and off putting buildings. We ended up at an old fish market which is now a whole bunch of wood fired grill places. We had the most amazing meal yet and the wine was fantastic. All we seem to be doing is eating and drinking! After lunch (that finished at 5) we went for a wander round the old quarter taking in some of the random stalls selling crap and some amazing graffiti. A few of us ended up in a cafe for a bit before heading the to worlds worst Irish bar. We sat down and ordered then they said its 40 pesos to stay and watch the band that were just setting off. 40 pesos is around £1.20 but we refused and they tried to kick us out dispute not having finished our drinks. We eventually settled on sitting outside.
Montevideo - Day 14 - 13/10/2012 (Saturday)
Today we decided to rent bikes and go for a picnic so we meet in reception to go to the supermarket. This sounds fairly mundane but you try getting 16 people to shop for food in a Spanish supermarket. What seemed like hours later we walked a while to go pick up our bikes. The bike I had didn't seem to have working brakes. It had a stopping distance of half a mile from 1 mph! We headed down to the beach and set off. Montevideo had about 10km of promenade along the river. We set off along this for a fair way. Eventually we got to a nice beach but it was a bit to busy to ride. So we pulled off and went and had our picnic in a park. After the food we sat around and chatted for a couple of hours. After that 3 of us went for a ride along the part we couldn't do earlier. Once the promenade finished and everything started to look a bit rougher we turned around and headed back. Once back where we started we thought it would be cool to go right to the other end so we did that to. We then had to return the bikes. I hadn't really been paying attention as to where the shop was. We eventually found the right street but not the right block. Thinking we were in the wrong place we tried 3 other streets before turning around and heading back. After quite some time we found it. It was quite a cold day but the sun had been out. We soon realised we'd turned to lobsters and were really burnt.
After a quick freshen up we went back to the cafe we'd found the day before. We headed out for another nice meal. Only 6 of us went so it was nice to eat as a small group. We'd planned to go out that night as a group but guess what. Our next bus was at half 7 the following morning so instead a few of us went to a bar. Sarah and a few others were so burnt they had to go to bed and get some sleep. :(
