July 1st (Wednesday) - Day 122 - Melbourne
Oh my god what a horrid start to a day. We had an early flight back to Melbourne. Didn't help that we had a heap of goon to drink the night before we left!! It was so cold and horrid outside. We dropped the car off at the car rental and went over the to terminal and checked in using the automatic machine things. As soon as we were finished a lady wandered over and asked us if we were on the 7am flight. We explained we were on the 8am flight then she told us that one was delayed by over an hour but there was time to get us on the 7am flight. She sent us to the desk but as soon as they saw we were checked in they said they could not change us hence we were stuck on the delayed flight. Never travel with Jet Star! Had 3 flights with them now - 2 have been delayed. Not a great record! Problem is we are flying with them to New Zealand. God help us! Anyway, we then had to get our hand baggage scanned as you do before going into departures. I forgot I had the laptop in my bag and was asked to take it out and clear security again. Then I had to have my bag swabbed for something just because I had been dumb. Shockingly I made it through and we had our long wait for the flight. It didn't even leave at the time they said it would and to add to the misery air traffic control delayed us further as we were a late running flight. Eventually we made it back to the centre of Melbourne and our hostel who then made us wait until 2pm until we could check in. We grabbed some lunch and waited until 2pm. When we got to our room we found a guy who seemed to have been living in the room since it had opened. His stuff was everywhere and he was still in bed with his Aussey 'chav'. We dumped our stuff and headed out. We still needed winter stuff and both needed new trainers so we set off on a part sight seeing, part shopping trip. We jumped on the free tram and saw the part of the city we had missed last time before jumping off at a new shopping area in the docklands. There was not a lot there as it was a new area but Sarah managed to get a coat. After playing with the snow machine (don't ask) we took the tram back to the centre and found another shopping area. In the very last shop I managed to find some shoes I liked. I got spotted by a sales assistant so he came over to help me. Being 'nice' he struck up conversation to find out I was travelling. He told me Melbourne was great for restaurants so of course I asked him what he would recommend. He then called his boss over and made it out that I had come to a shoe shop to ask for dining advice. Made me feel about 12. Anyway I liked the shoes and went to pay expecting to pay 100 dollars for them - he then asked for 180! They had been cleverly placed by a rack of 100 dollar shoes but they were a lot more. I just walked out leaving he guy wondering what the heck was going on! We headed back to the hostel as we were feeling worn out from our not so great day. This guy was still in bed. We chilled out for a bit before getting some dinner. We wanted an early night but when we got back to the hostel this guy was watching films on his laptop at full volume. He turned it down a bit when we asked but it was still really loud and it took us forever to get to sleep!
July 2nd (Thursday) - Day 123 - Melbourne
We had heard from loads of people that the St Kilda area of Melbourne was a good place to visit so we decided to grace the area with our presence. We had to buy a tram ticket before you board. The first shop had sold out of the one we wanted so had to walk miles to find the closest shop. Defeats the point of public transport. Once we had the ticket it was a 15 min journey. St Kilda is right by the sea/port. The port being a huge natural harbour with a tiny entrance. By the sea they had a mini beach which we stood on for a bit and there is also a really long pier leading out to some rocks. We walked down there. It was a nice day but the wind was up which was blowing us all over the place. We tried to spot some penguins at the end but it was the wrong time of day so headed back to the town area. We walked the length of one of the streets and found the famous pub where the Neighbours stars do a famous trivia night (apparently we are going??). We then wandered down to the other end of town where there is a some theme park. We had a look around but none of the rides looked that exciting so gave it a miss. There was another part of Melbourne we wanted to check out so jumped on a tram to take us there. It took forever as it went through the centre of the city and was forever stopping. As soon as we arrived the heavens opened so we didn't stay long. It did not let up all the way back so we decided to go and watch a film at the cinema. To keep a hold of any street cred I may have I won't say which one! That evening we were going to have a quiet one as we had an early start. However walking through town we had spotted a place that did cheap meals. Once we were in they told us they were doing a quiz so we hung around for 3 hours to play. We were rubbish as most the questions were Aus based but Sarah did win some drinks during a random spontaneous group game of heads or tails (however the guy put a rather rude twist on the game), mind you he put a rather rude twist on most of the night. Was kind of funny in a sad way!
