July 3rd (Friday) - Day 124 - Great Ocean Road
After a restless night of bins being emptied for hours outside our room window we had an early start for our 3 day trip down the Great Ocean Road. We got picked up and taken to the main office where they sorted us on to our correct trip. We ended up with a group of 5 other people, 2 Germans, 2 Singaporean's and a Swiss. Our first stop was in a tiny town called Torquay famous for the origins of the RIP CURL brand. The guide gave us until 10... 10:30 the German girls arrive back. They had been shopping but hardly brought a thing. Annoyed we set off again. We then drove to the first beach which makes up the famous road. It had really deep Orange coloured sand. Our next stop was a light house on the end of a long head land with some impressive scenery. Next was an inland waterfall which was about 30 metres high. At the bottom you could do a few hundred metre river walk. You had to cross the river to reach it. Sarah went in front of me and slipped off the rock and landed in the water. Thankfully she was okay but was very wet up to her knees. After the walk and lunch we had a a few minutes to look around one of the few towns along the road. The next part of the drive hugged the shore line for miles. Dramatic cliffs and beaches all the way. Strangely enough I saw more rainbows during that drive than I have ever seen in my life. We also saw loads of Koala's dotted around in the trees. Next up was a rain forest walk before we headed for our camp ground. We'd paid the extra for a dorm room as camping in the winter didn't seem like a great idea. After a really early dinner we drove to another rain forest walk. Now pitch black we were shown hundreds of glow worms along the side of the path. We also saw a number of huge tree's you could climb into. Unfortunately the best one got blown down days before we arrived. We than headed back for a really early night as no one in the group was up for doing anything else other than sleep.
July 4th (Saturday) - Day 125 - Great Ocean Road
It was a kind of cold but really funny night. The 2 Singaporean's were friends and were sharing a twin right next door to the rest of the group. We could faintly hear the guy snoring and the girl screaming at him every 10 minutes because he was snoring again. Made us all laugh! After a strained breakfast with no one talking to anyone we hit the road. Our first stop was what I had been wanting to see the most; the 12 Apostles and the start of a dramatic cliff coast line. The 12 Apostles are a series of stacks formed by the sea. The land around them gets worn away while a column of rock remains. There used to be 12 but currently there are 10. Guess it would cost millions to rename the area! We stopped at several vantage points along the way before moving on to an area with loads of different features which is also famous for a number of ship wrecks. There were a number of large formations out to sea as well as a beach, a blow hole and a cave we didn't have time to see. We stopped in a real local town for lunch and had a look around. Next was a formation called London Bridge. This used to be 2 arches out at sea (the sea wore away a section of the rock to form an arch). One of the arches collapsed back in the 80's while people were walking along the 2nd arch. They had to be air lifted back to the car park. Finally we visited Tower Hill (don't know why they are named after London tube stations!). This was an old volcano which is now home to hundreds of native creatures. We saw loads of kangaroo's, Koola's and emus. The area also included a very steep walk to a view point where you could see the mountains on one side and the coast line on the other. We then had a 2 hour drive to the place we were staying. The place was at the foot of the Grampian mountains (I will tell you the view tomorrow as it was dark when we arrived). We had some dinner then played pool and watched an Aussie film.
