June 1st (Monday) - Day 92 - Surfers Paradise and Byron Bay
Our bus was not leaving until midday so we had to find something to do for a few hours. The one thing we had not done was climb the Q tower. We went to buy the tickets and I randomly flashed my backpacker card to see if there was any discount and we got the student rate. Heaps of money saved we jumped in the lift. It climbed 87 floors in 49 odd seconds it was so quick. I tried to jump in the lift and barely got half an inch off the ground! As the place had just opened there was only 2 other people at the top so we had the whole place to ourselves. The views were amazing. One direction was sandy beaches as far as you could see and in the other direction were mountains. We spent ages at the top just looking out. We then had to catch our bus which was a few hours down to Byron Bay. Once checked in we went for a walk around the bay and town. It was really quiet but guess it must be rammed in the summer. The bay was amazing and I fell in love with the place straight away! The town itself was full of drugged up hippies which made the place even more colourful. That evening we went to a local backpacker places and got some extremely cheap meals and beer! (Cheapest yet (in Aus) wow!) They were playing loads of party games and lots of give aways. Suddenly Sarah thought she saw her sisters friend but did not want to say anything. We played some Jenga on the table and I had enough once they announced musical chairs was next!
June 2nd (Tuesday) - Day 93 - Byron Bay
Instead of spending the day on the beach we wanted to go for a walk to the most easterly point of Australia. We walked along the beach for about a mile and then found the way to the walking path. The path took you up a steep hill then back down onto the beach. We climbed a few rocks before pressing on. Again there were loads more hills but the views over the bay was amazing and totally worth it! We spent a good couple of hours walking before we reached the most easterly point. It was nothing special but we could now say we have been as far west and as far east as you can go in Australia. We pressed on a little further until we reached the light house on top of the hill. Just as we did the heavens opened but luckily we found some shelter. We started eating a picnic and I got chatting to the guy sat beside me who happened to be the national trust manager for the area. He was walking the tracks to see what work needed to be done. We had a great chat with him about Aus and wildlife, road kill and tourists. He was a really nice guy! Once the rain stopped we walked back down the hill to the town. Someone thought they saw a whale but we did not get a chance to see it. That evening as we were cooking someone walked up to Sarah and said "I know you". It turned out to be the girl Sarah had seen the night before who was in fact her sisters friend. So random to met someone in a hostel like that! We ended up watching a film with them that night.
