March 28th (Friday) - Day 28 - Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
Another early start on the bus to Siem Reap. Our driver was manic! If something was in the road, such as a cow he went faster. He had to hit the brakes really hard so many times! Half way we stopped at a road side market which mainly sold fried tralanchlars. Once we arrived we went out for lunch in a Mexican. It was so hot and the beer was so cold that we spent most of the afternoon there. We headed to "doctor fish". This is where there are hundreds of fish and they eat dead skin off your body. Lisa did her feet and Tom did his whole body. I wimped out because I hate fish. At 7 we watched a parade (like a carnival) with puppets made by the local kids. Had dinner with the group and then chilled out some more knowing we had a 5am start the next day.
March 29th (Saturday) - Day 29 - Siem Reap
Met the group (who were very docile) at 5am. We drove up to Ankor Wat and watched the sun rise. It was amazing. All the pictures I had seen on postcards had not done it justice and even my pictures dont do it justice. The place is massive. The temple took 37 years to complete in the 1100's. There are also hundreds of other temples in the area. What makes it so special was everything was made from stone and no surface was blank. The size of it is mind boggerling. There is no way Camboida could do this again now as it stands. My camera decided to pack up AGAIN! I am going to have to get a new one (anyone want to buy me a birthday present??). We spent 90 minutes looking around and hardly saw any of it. We quickly went back to the hotel for breakfast and headed out again. We stopped by the side of the road to play with some monkeys. So many jokes about Sarah being a monkey slipped out :) We headed for another temple. This one was in a worse state than Ankor. The temples got forgotten about in 1600 when the people fled and a forest grew around them. Even to the point where massive 500 year old trees are growing throughout the walls. Our guide was crazy and Jess could not stop singing. Mixed with the sleep deprivation it made for a very weird experience. Next we went to the temple where Tomb Raider was based. We even entered the temple tomb raider style. We went through the jungle, over some walls and through a moat. This one had loads of trees growing out of it. We headed back to the hotel to get out of the 40 degree heat. Later that afternoon we headed out to watch the sunset. We climbed a massive hill and then climbed the temple at the top. The stairs where only 2 inches wide and there were at least 50. Once we got to the top we relieased everyone else had the same idea. The problem was that it was over cast. We took a few pictures and decided to leave before the rush. The 4 of us went out for dinner and had a DIY BBQ.
March 30th (Sunday) - Day 30 - Siem Reap
Met the group on the bus and headed for the kings terrace. This is a long flat viewing platform with a lawn in front where all the entertainment took place such as elephants fighting cows and tight rope dancing. Again everything was carved. Next to that was a smaller terrace for the leper king. While walking to the next temple we wandered into a monk doing a blessing. He was blessing a family and wait for it... their new Lexus 4by4. Its common for people to get cars, bikes etc blessed. Thats why they all drive like crazy. They think they are protected. The next temple we saw had 3 trees growing out of it but they had been cut off at about 10 foot. The roots are holding the temple together and it will collapse when they die. Next we climbed another temple and went for lunch. We then had a 40 minute drive to the next one. This was a lot longer and flatter than the others. Then we visted the land mine museum where I brought a water bottle holder made from rope that I would later find out made me a fasion guri by Bangkok taxi drivers. We saw 2 more temples before calling it a day.
