Neil's Round the World Trip!
Myself and Ruaridh went for a walk through the nearby Mount Emily Park and then managed to find the closest MRT Station, Little India. We got the subway to the harbour and then had lunch in an Italian restaurant called Pastamania which proudly displayed a huge sign saying "NO MSG". I think that's why I haven't really enjoyed the Chinese food I've had here. Apparently they use huge amounts of MSG in their food and it really makes you thirsty and can also give you a headache. I ordered eggplant pasta which was really nice.
After the meal we walked to the bus terminal and hopped on a bus to Sentosa Island. This island was formerly very small with only a small Britsh military base on it. However when Singapore became independent they decided to reclaim land, add Indonesian sand and make the whole island a recreational theme park.
We got off the bus and walked along the white sands towards the Dolphin Lagoon and then reached the southernmost point of Asia. There was a sign and we waited along with about a thousand other tourists to be pictured next to the sign. We walked further along the coast and saw lots of people playing volleyball and football. We reached another beach and saw a sign for the luge. It was only $8 so we decided to do it and so we got on the chairlift and put on our cycling helmets. The chairlift rose to quite a height and my sandals nearly slipped off at one point! We were given a brief guide to using the luge and the off we went! It had been raining so the slippy track made it difficult to navigate the chicanes. It was really fast and was well worth the effort.
We wandered into a beach bar called the "Bikini Bar" and ordered a beer. We got chatting to the Singaporean barman, who enjoyed talking to us about football and although he was obsessed with the English Premiership, he also knew a suprising amount about the SPL. He said his favourite team was Hearts. I told him about my disappointing experience in Raffles Bar. He told me he used to work in the Swiss Hotel and could make an excellent Singapore Sling. He made it and it was amazing!
We walked further along to the Shangri La Hotel resort and sat on one of the loungers round the lagoon. The sun came out so we slapped on the lotion and sunbathed for about 2 hours. However a rainstorm prompted us to move on and we got our bus back to the harbour on mainland Singapore.
There were several things we didn't bother to see on our excursion to the island. We didn't visit Fort Silloso, the old British fort. Although we found an interesting fact on the information book. The British built their guns facing out to sea but the Japanese launched a suprise attack from mainland Singapore and took the island with ease. The fort became a POW camp until the end of the war.
We also never visited the Carlsberg Tower as it wasn't that tall and also didn't visit the massive Merlion statue as we saw the original on the harbourside.
We jumped on an MRT train and it took us back to Little India. We were feeling pretty hungry so we went to a vegetarian Indian restaurant and again used our hands to eat the assortment of curry on a banana leaf. We also ordered Mango Lassis' which are basically Indian milkshakes. I was drinking mine when I noticed something in an ice-cube in my milkshake; it was a fly. Yes, a fly was frozen in one of my ice-cubes but I didn't make a fuss like a local I just scooped out the offending ice-cube and carried on drinking!
We finally arrived back at the hostel and chilled out in the room and fell asleep....zzzz....
