Neil's Round the World Trip!
I had to get up early today at 7am for my Cape Tribulation Rainforest Tour. I was so hungover and even breakfast at Daintree a little town north of Cairns didn't help. I spoke to 2 English girls Bella and Rosie on the bus. They told me about Peru as they've just come from there. They said Macchu Pichu was amazing and that Lima wasn't dangerous. Also they said watch out at ATMs as the cash comes first then your card (Rosie forgot her credit card which got munched up by the ATM so no-one was able to use it). I also spoke to a guy from "Norn Iron" about rugby but there's only so much time I can talk about rugby for before falling asleep. Thankfully we arrived at the Daintree River quickly having driven through lush rainforest and sugar cane plantations.
The Daintree National Park is the oldest stretch of tropical forest in the world. Our tour bus stopped at the crossing and we got on a croc-spotting boat but we only saw a 10cm baby croc floating on a twig!! We cruised up the river and got off on the other side where our tour bus was waiting. We drove to the nearby Jindalba Botanical Boardwalk through the rainforest. There were some really dangerous plants I never knew about. Firstly there is a vine called Wait-aWhile which has barbed spikes like fishing hooks, so sharp they can tear deeply into flesh and rip off clothing! Also we were warned about touching the gimby-gimby plant which has little spikes on the leaves that release toxins that give you a heart attack by shutting down the nervous system. Our guide told us about a German backpacker camping in the rainforest who needed the toilet (a No2) and picked up gimby as she'd run out of toilet tissue yeah well she burned..her you know and then had an agonising death.
We walked through mangroves and saw crabs and green ants (you can lick their bum and it tastes like lime/lemon citrusy) The aborigines make a lemonade using these ants! I never tried it.
We had lunch at Cape Tribulation and walked along the beach but couldn't go near the beach due to the lethal boxfish jellyfish being present. While eating my meal I chatted to Kris (a female nurse from Canada) and Paul (from Blackburn). We hopped on the bus and drove to Mossman Gorge via Alexandria Lookout.
We passed through an Aboriginal community who now own vast areas of the land as it was the land of the Kuku Yulangi and has been handed back by the Oz government (how kind).
Mossman Gorge was amazing. I went for a swim and there were fishes all around us. I also swam upstream against the current which was a real workout!!
We then drove to the home of the "rich and famous" Port Douglas. The town used to be a little fishing village until upmarket resorts starting being built around the village due to the proximity of reefs and the beautiful 4 mile beach.
We were then dropped off at our respective hostels. When I returned me and Dane went down to Gilligans restaurant and I had bangers and mash (good value and nice). We watched The Mummy returns (which is awful!!) with some French dorm mates (who had just arrived).
I went to sleep early as I have my reef cruise tomorrow.
