Neil's Round the World Trip!
We got up early and I drove us to Milford Sound. We booked another night in Q town but in a better hostel called Pine Lodge. We drove to Te Anau and had breakfast before continuing south-west to the Milford Sound area.
We stopped in a beautiful golden field surrounded by mountains..it was idyllic and then the tour buses arrived and hundreds of tourists trampled over the field to join us in this unspoilt wilderness! We then stopped off at the Mirror Lakes but it was too windy for a perfect reflection.
We got to the Milford area having gone through Homer's tunnel, a 1km tunnel through a mountain! The scenery was spectacular and we arrived at the fjord soon enough. We ate our peanut butter and jam sandwiches and walked round to the cruise boat docks. We got on our cruise boat and were taken out into the fjord. There were majestic waterfalls on huge rock faces cascading down into the water. We sailed out to sea before going back into the sound (it's easy to see why Captain Cook never found the fjord, from sea you can't see it) We sailed past the seal rock and gazed at the lazy seals sunbathing on the rock. Also we sailed under a waterfall and got pretty wet! We left around 5 and drove back to Queenstown stopping at a calmer Mirror Lakes on the way.We then watched an incredible sunset as we drove past Te Anau. Our petrol was running low so we set off for the nearby town of Lumsden but it was closed. We had to drive to a town further away that had a credit card self-service pump. Oh it was touch and go whether we'd make it but we did!
We checked into the Pinewood Lodge and then went down to Winnies Bar which had a rowdy atmosphere but at least it had an atmosphere! We drank lots of NZ beer: Tui, Monteiths and Macy X's. We watched an older guy dancing like a thunderbird "puppet-style"...oh dear.
Headed to bed at 1am as have another early start..going to throw myself off a cliff tomorrow..before you get anxious I will be attached to the launch hut by a strong rope!
