Neil's Round the World Trip!
We got up early as the Canadian woke us up with his annoying alarm which is a voice that shouts: "It's 7 o'clock, it's time to wake up!!". We walked down to the Glacier Walk Centre to get kitted up and who shouts from a departing Glacier bus "Neil , Hi! Nice Haircut!" none other than "Team America" unbelievable!
We got our boots, talons, jacket, gloves and hat. Then we all got on a Galcier bus and headed up to the car park near the Franz Josef Glacier. We walked for about 2km and then were split into groups in terms of ability. Obviously me and Ben were in the advanced group. We walked up the dirty part of the glacier with our Irish/Kiwi guide who pick-axed us a way up the glacier. There were some dangerous drops but ropes have been fitted to sections to make it easier. The turquoise-blue ice is amazing, we found a blue tunnel so that caused frenzied photographing. We clambered further up the Glacier and had our lunch (which was peanut butter sandwiches!) Some of the paths we had to walk on were difficult and a Swedish guy fell and slashed his calf open.
We got back to the hostel at 5pm and were so knackered. We conked out on our dorm beds and were only roused by the smell of free curry soup wafting into our dorm. We had some and then went to the Blue Ice Cafe with a few people that had been our walk. We were all extremely tired and called it a night at 10.30pm.
