Neil's Round the World Trip!
I woke up with Margaret bringing me a cup of tea (I've not had proper tea since I left) It was great and then I had my hot shower! We had breakfast and I phoned home speaking briefly to my mum. I then spoke to my gran Morrison for a while and found out how she was keeping. I'll need to give my gran Lawrie a call soon as well and surprise her.
I got my money transfer code from my dad's email and then scribbled it down on a note.
We then set off in the car to the picturesque Devonport area and climbed the North Head which still has the gun battlements built during the war. We walked around and got great views of the surrounding areas and of course Auckland city skyline.
We drove into Devonport's main street and I picked up some leaflets. We then missed the ferry to the city so we waited a further 20mins for the next one. The ferry service is really good and we're over there pretty quickly.
We went into a mall and walked around the shops and decided to have a bite to eat. We settled on an Italian take-away in the indoor foodcourt. I realised I'd left my code on the bed and so thought my chance of getting my money was gone but then Margaret said that I could retrieve the code from my dad's email..aha..so we found an ink shop with internet and got the code. I also tried to upload some photos as we'd paid for half an hour. However the computer was slow so we left.
I then went to a Western Union agent and got my money (or my dad's money) and then walked with Jack ad Margaret to Stray (the NZ Tour Company). I booked a tour on stray with help from Jack and Margaret. So I'm doing the North Island in 5 days starting tomorrow.
We then walked around the city which I really like as it's right on the harbour with all the boats. This is the "City of Sails" you know. We then had a drink in an Irish bar on the trendy quay and watched the stylish Aucklandians stroll into the swish bars and restaurants.
We got the ferry back to Devonport and then drove back to Albany in the rush hour traffic.
We had a nice meal of chicken, veg and tatties. Douglas (Jack and Margaret's son) dropped in along with his wife Nikki and kids Lauren and Matthew. We had tea and chatted about my travels and I tried to learn the rules of sudoku from Lauren and Margaret. Matthew has a similar hairstyle to me; spiky yeah!
I gave Doug and Nikki a "Chewing the Fat" DVD initially thinking their son and daughter could watch it. I told Nikki to vet it before unleashing the classic Scottish humour on them although it can be a little vulgar (ice-cream van scene?)
I had some coffee later and updated this here journal!
Tomorrow I'm off again into the unknown and will return to see Jack and Margaret on Tuesday so the journal may be quiet until then..yes I can hear your sighs from here!
