Neil's Round the World Trip!
We got up early as usual and set off for Saltos del Lajo waterfall. Bridget's lasagne had an effect on everyone's stomach and so we had to stop at a nearby service station. There was queueing at the toilet, thanks Bridget. It wasn't pretty.
We eventually reached the waterfall which was nice but when you've been to Niagara Falls it's not so spell-binding. Nick urged me to run with him into the spray and I did for some reason; completely soaking myself.
Bridget was very hungover and was curled up like a cat on the backseat with Nick strangely stroking her hair for the remainder of the journey.
We drove on to another service station and ate some horrible hot dogs. The bus smelled minging for some reason..
We arrived at the Balduzzi Winery, Italian owned and really nice. The vineyard tour guide was pretty fit and made the winery tour a bit less boring. We had to ask mundane questions. So I got mine out the way by asking how many employees there were; answer 26.
We then had a wine tasting session, I really liked the Merlot but the sweet dessert wine was disgusting.
We drove on towards Santiago via a small roadside restaurant which had an adorable kitten scampering around the kitchen. Not very hygenic but the kitten kept the girls entertained. Fair play, the woman made great avocado and cheese sandwiches.
We dropped off the anonymous couple from Melbourne. I disliked them immensely. The guy had horrible, greasy hippy hair, cold blue eyes and horrible glasses. He really should have gone to Specsavers but I guess they don't have them in Australia. He also wore horrible synthetic brown trousers you'd see in a 1970s Open University lecture. He was a vile, arrogant Aussie who was condescending and always thought he was right. Don't you just hate people like that! His girlfriend seemed perfectly normal.
I'm staying in a different hostel now which is much nicer than La Casa Roja. It's called Che Lagarto and is in a nicer area of Santiago too. My tour group checked in and I spoke to an Argentinian couple in my dorm with my average Spanish. They were here supporting an Argentine football club called Newell's Old Boys who were playing a Santiago team in the Copa Libertadores ( South American Champion's League).
Then me, Nick, Bridget, Rachael and Rebecca went to a great Chinese restaurant nearby. I had a beef, seaweed thing; delicious. We walked back to the hostel and decided to check out some Santiago nightlife. We got a taxi to Avenida Suecia in the Providencia area. We walked into the main bar street and were surrounded by touts. We eventually opted for the Green Bull Bar which was loud, dark and smokey. We had a stupid cocktail waitress who stood at the bar took our order, leaned over to the barman gave the order and then handed us the drinks. She then asked us for a tip, she screeched: "My tip, my tip". We gave her a handfu of shrapnel and walked out.
We moved to a more civilised bar called Louisiana and had a fishbowl of caipirinha. However we got a jug and it wasn't 2 litres as stated on the bar menu. Nick drank most of it too! We went to another bar and then around 3am the lights came on so we went back to the hostel.
We watched a film in the lounge called "Anchorman" and everyone fell asleep on the huge sofa.
