Neil's Round the World Trip!
I had a great sleep and waited on the girls to take their showers. Gabe took a world record 30 minute shower and once Sally and Sophie had been in; I had the cold dregs of the water tank.
We all sat in the adjacent Minute Man Pizza restaurant and had pancakes with syrup. It was great and really filling. The guy who owns Minute Man Pizza is from Boston and has been here for 4 years. Why is he living in a depressing, cold little town surrounded by nothing? We were desperate to ask but didn't. Maybe it was a Bolivian girl? Anyone in Uyuni please ask and email me, I'd be eternally grateful (It could be he's making a fortune from tourists?).
I stole a mug of hot water from MM and shaved. It felt great after almost 8 days without shaving. We put our clothes in the laundry and then had mugs of hot chocolate in the Kactus restaurant. We were sitting chatting when a shadow appeared on the table, I turned round to see the annoying GAP year student from Edinburgh; James. He'd returned from Colombia and had dyed his hair blonde. I was shocked, he chirped "what the hell you doing here..(posh laugh)". I made some small talk and then he left. I better not meet him again..por favor!!!
I booked my overnight train to Villazon, there were no common seats left so I had to buy an executive seat for 12 quid ouch! I walked to the bus station to see the girls who were slumped on a bench bemoaning the fact there were no seats left. Everyone wants to get out of Uyuni if you snooze you lose. However Gabe was trying to bribe the woman and wouldn't give up hope of snagging someone's seat.
I tried to upload my photos but after 40 minutes waiting the computer froze..aaah! Very annoying! I walked back to the bus station and found Gabe still trying to get some seats even sit on the floor. However after a while the assistant said to come back at 7.30pm and maybe someone will have cancelled. We picked up our laundry and had some out-of-this-world pizza from dear old Minute Man. We toasted our trips with some champagne and then had a game of "I have never". I found out some interesting things about the girls...oh the stuff that goes on in private schools and Oxford University for that matter!
The girls decided that they couldn't be bothered leaving tonight and they'd leave early tomorrow morning. They escorted me to the station and brought out their knickers (very funny) to wave me off!!
I met a guy on the platform, he'd been in my hostel in Cusco. However I was glad to see him unlike James, he's funny and outgoing..a bit like myself! haha...
I sat down in my executive seat and the train slowly moved off towards the Argentina border..woohoo!!
Well it's that time:
BEST BITS
Walking around the beautiful Isla del Sol.
Chilling out in Copacabana watching the sun go down while drinking beer with my Swedish friend Beata.
Staying with a friendly Bolivian family in Cochabamba and studying the language. Enjoy the whisky Jose you deserve it after sitting through hours of me speaking Spanish!
Climbing Tunari mountain (5200m).
Exploring the Chapari jungle with friends from my Spanish school.
Drinking chicha and then hitting the best nightclubs in Bolivia!
Driving around the Salar de Uyuni with my 3 funny English friends and a mad French girl!
Eating salteñas: they're delicious!
Staying in the plush HI hostel in Sucre and walking around the beautiful colonial city.
The ridiculously cheap prices!!!! :)
WORST BITS
Going "liquid", yeah bout of food poisoning which stopped me doing the world's most dangerous road.
Freezing my balls off in Uyuni and also being subjected to relentless cumbia Bolivian music by our driver (I bought the CD so you can listen to it too!)
Sitting for 8 or 10 hours on a freezing cold bus with no toilet. Also the buses stink and there could be a goat behind you (as happened to me!)
