Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up around 1 feeling a little rough but the hot shower at my hostel helped a bit. I met Mariana and she drove me to her parent's apartment near the bandera monument. The weather was cold, damp and drizzly reminiscent of your average Glaswegian day.
I met Mariana's parents Damian and Martha. I chatted to them with Mariana acting as an interpreter whenever I got stuck on a word or my grammar collapsed. Also her parents speak really fast and it was difficult to understand especially as the Argentinians have a different word for you "vos" and any "ll" is pronounced "sh..". We had little triangle sandwiches before the match started. I wore my Argentina top and Martha asked me lots of questions..a bit like my mum when we I have friends round.
The game kicked off and we watched the opening minutes which were fast and erratic. Then Mexico scored, we decided to start drinking yerba mate from the little wooden gourd. Mariana showed me how to make it so when I'm home I can have a mate session with friends or family (I'm bringing home yerba and my gourd). Argentina equalised and the house erupted with joy especially Damian who was sitting right in front of the television and was obviously nervous by his seating posture.
The match went to extra-time and then Argentina scored and after some nervy last goal mouth chances for both sides the match finished. Their apartment is really high up, 11 floors so from the balcony there are great views of the surrounding area. We stood out on the balcony and watched the immediate euphoria on the streets; peeping cars with their indicators, fans draped in the flag shouting and music blasting loud from apartments as people celebrated.
We toasted Argentine victory with some Johnnie Walker (black label) and then Mariana's brother, his wife and kids arrived. We chatted with them and had more sandwiches and cakes. I spoke to Mariana's nieces Lucia and the adorable Lola (who speaks her own baby language). We then had a great meal of milaneza (I got over my phobia after Bolivia) chicken, pizza and potatoes.
Mariana's brother then gave me and her a lift to Listen bar where Mariana's friend Sylvia (or chimmy as her friends call her) was celebrating her 21st birthday. It reminded me of the Social bar in Royal Exchange Square back home. I chatted to one of Mariana's friends called Meluza who is a lawyer. We chatted in Spanish although I think Meluza could have talked English as she studied it for 10 years.
We left Listen bar around 12 and went to a huge nightclub down by the flag monument called Moore (as in Rodger Moore..it had a bond theme). The music was mainly electronica which isn't really my fave music that I like dancing to but I was drunk on vodka and speed (no not the drug it's what Argentine Red Bull is called). I had a great night and returned to my hostel at 6am again!!
