Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up at 9ish and had breakfast with the Italian guy. We chatted in Spanish about football mainly while the maid of the hostel made us coffee and sticky croissants. I met Mariana and she drove me to the river. We walked along the riverside or "went footing" as Mariana told me Argentines call power walking along the riverside. We also saw the monument to the Argentina flag (the only country in the world to have such a monument).
We walked down the steps of the Parque España which gives great views of the river and the islands nearby. The huge red block staircase also house a theatre, school and various other things. We had lunch in a restaurant called "VIP". I ordered pizza but the Argentines love lots of cheese on their pizza and it's a bit much after a few slices. I tried Quilmes (the most popular Argentine beer) which was really refreshing. It was really sunny today and we sat out in the sunshine with other Argentinians who were browsing the papers, playing football or just people watching. We walked along the riverside to the stylish bar called "Davis" and the colourful syllos of the Museum of Modern Art.
Mariana then drove me to "La Florida" which is the collective name for the sandy riverside beaches. I also saw the huge Rosario-Victoria bridge which spans the river and connects the mainland to the island.
I headed back to the hostel and had a 2 hour siesta. I got up and had some drinks with the highly active, charismatic Australian called Michael, another Australian called Phil and a crazy Quebecois called Jean (who was just hyper and a little crazy).
We went to a really trendy bar called Tomate and we were soon captivated by how stunning the girls of Rosario are. We sat watching the football surrounded by the beautiful people of Rosario, sipping beer from huge 1 litre Heineken bottles. I bought an Argentina shirt for tomorrow's match against Mexico.
We went back to the hostel and had some food and wine. We met a Canadian called Laird and he soon joined us drinking wine in the kitchen. Michael kept telling us about this amazing bar he goes to where everyone is so friendly and there is a great vibe. He's been living in Rosario for 5 months and loves this bar. It's on the same street as the hostel and only one block along. During the day it looks like a derelict building but at night comes alive and is queued out the door!
We went to "Michael's bar" and had a great night speaking to lots of Argentinians. Also the guy from Quebec got totally off his head because today is the national day of Quebec and so he kept trying to chink glasses and shout random swear words in French. We had a reat night and staggered back to the hostel at 6am.
