Neil's Round the World Trip!
We got up early and got a subway to Puerto Madero which is a nice little area by the docks. There are nice restaurants, chic cafes and boliches. I walked along the dockside with Mariana laughing at all the random coloured cows dotted around the place. I bought my boat ticket to Uruguay and then we had lunch in a nice little place called Spell Cafe. The steak I had was a let-down and the salad was weird; rice, brocolli and lettuce. We dawdled around the luxury apartments and continued south to the working-class, impoverished La Boca.
The horrible 60s housing could transport you to one of Glasgow's East End suburbs like Shettleston. It's grim and dangerous especially when you get lost like me and Mari did! We eventually found our way out of the poor La Boca area missing out on the tourist trap of Caminito. We kept walking and reached San Telmo where an antiques fair was taking place. There were also tango exhibition dances. The place was teeming with tourists, porteños and beggars.
We walked back to the centre and walked along the main shoppping street called Florida. However we also walked along the brash, busy Lavalle. We had a walk around the Pacifico Galleries which is an opulent Princes Square-style mall. We watched another tango exhibition dance outside on the street although this was more modern. The dancers were quick and dancing to Gotan Project (the CD I have).
We got the subway to Ave de Mayo and queued to get into the historic Cafe Tortoni which is a really snooty but famous cafe. We had cappucinos and scones which were crap and expensive. It seems you are paying to sit in the old-time atmosphere rather than for the food. However we did have an efficient waiter who was all dressed in black and white and brought us butter when we asked for it but then wacked it on the bill!
The place was all a little too touristy with lots of people taking photos. I suppose that's what happens when somewhere is listed in the Lonely Planet. I accompanied Mariana to the bus terminal and waved her off as she left for Rosario. I got the subway back to Congress near my hostel all alone again. I had a rest in my dormitory and chatted to the other guys from Brazil, Israel and Switzerland. I checked my emails and realised why Che Lagarto never received a reply from me. Their email had been placed in junk mail..thanks Hotmail!
