Neil's Round the World Trip!
I woke up at 10ish today still tired because the Korean in my dorm (that's Cliff) snored his head off all night and had sporadic coughing fits. He really should see a doctor as he's had it for 2 months. However he refuses to go to the doctor because he doesn't know any Spanish and lost his phrase book 3 months ago...crazy guy!
I walked into town with Amira and we tried to find a bar to watch the Argentina match against Germany. All the bars were rammed full of people. However eventually we found a restaurant which was showing the game and had free tables. We sat down and realised it was a Chinese buffet thing. So we piled lots of MSG laden food on to our plates and chomped away watching the match.
The game livened up in the second half when Argentina scored and it looked like they might beat the Germans. There was a tense atmosphere as people dined kitted out in Argentina jester hats, shirts and scarfs. There were frequent shouts of "hijo de puta" (son-of-a-w****) from a mad animated guy sitting at the table in front of us. However Germany scored and the game went to extra time and then the dreaded penalties!!
I was disappointed Messi didn't play as he's amazing! Anyway the Germans looked comfortable and when the Argentinian player missed...the writing was on the wall. It was a shame and as the Germans celebrated people filed out in silence. The streets were so quiet and everyone had a glum look on their face. What a contrast to the aftermath of the Mexico match. My adopted team is out! May the best team win (except England...and I don't want any hate mail like poor Andy Murray is receiving at the moment!!).
I walked along the main shopping streets with Amira and we saw the Casa Rosa, Obelisk and some important buildings with soldiers standing guard with bayonets. We got the subway to the Palermo area and walked around the nice boulevards. The Lonely Planet says this is a "yuppies wet dream"...I have to agree. There are luxury shops, nice buildings, parks, fountains and stylish people everywhere you look. We saw some of the Italy match walking by countless tv shops. They won comfortably so Ida will be happy...forza Italia!
We got on a crammed subway train back to San Juan and then chilled in the hostel sipping yerba mate (I'm sure there is an addictive substance in it!!). An old English woman who is teaching business English to students tried to chat me up...what a horrible experience!
I saw Amira and ran off with her to the Vieja Rotissere nearby. It's a great little steakhouse and was crammed full of people. It's a little strange when you look at your watch and realise people are eating huge steaks at 12.30am! We sat and chatted eating huge chunky steaks and red wine. We left the restaurant around 2am and walked back to the hostel.
When I entered my dorm Cliff the Korean was snoring outrageously! Luckily I found my ear plugs and after a while I got to sleep!
Tomorrow I'm meeting Mariana and hanging out with her until Sunday evening. On Monday I leave for Uruguay.
