It was 2 a.m. and we were packing our bags again after spending a few days in Athens. We boarded the plane at 4 a.m. and traveled to Prague for our 14 hour layover before reaching Stockholm. Once we arrived in Prague, we both found the most uncomfortable benches and took a 2 hour power nap in the airport terminal. Feeling refreshed and ready to explore the city we secured our bags and took the bus into central Prague. It's a beautifully preserved city undamaged by WWII with amazing architecture and an impressive number of old buildings and winding streets. This city was under communist rule for over 40 years and seldom visited by tourists until 1989. As the rain stopped we walked across the Charles Bridge which has 30 statues that line that bridge and was once the only crossing from the castle to the old town. Wonderful views such as the Prague Caste and the Vltava river made it an unforgettable experience. Walking through the streets we came to Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock. Completed in 1410, the clock was used to calculate the position of the sun, moon, and stars. After a quick lunch of traditional goulash we walked to the Prague Castle where the Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have had their offices. Prague Castle is one of the biggest castles in the world at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide. Within the complex is St. Vitus Cathedral with numerous beautiful cathedral's chapel and French Gothic structure. After hours of walking, we reached the top of the hill and came to the Funicular railway. With an elevation of 130 m, 510 m of track, and a grade of 298%, the ride down takes 3 minutes. We made our way, very slowly, back to the bridge were we enjoyed hot wine and a bowl of mash, krout, and sausage, then back to the station and airport for the flight to Sweden.
