Fraser Island!!
Fraser Island....what an amazing experience. We were also very lucky with the weather when we were there, as it had been raining constantly there for the last 2 weeks or so. We got to the bus station, and got ourselves a coffee while we waited for the tour guide to come get us. There were quite a few people around, and soon we were being separated into two groups. We were in a 4 x 4 with a group of 4 guys; Nestor who was from Columbia, Luis from Mexico and Sedat and Leo from Turkey. They all are studying in Brisbane. Also we had a Korean girl called Sophie and two American girls; Devan and Chelsie. Darren was our driver and he was really funny as well, the guy driving the other tour looked like Owen Wilson so me and char called him Owen the whole time. Everyone got on really well, although Sophie didn’t talk much and didn’t camp with the rest of us so we were not that friendly with her. We drove to Rainbow Beach to start off with, where we stopped for food. It was very beautiful although it started to rain lightly when we were there however the sun was shining so we really did see a rainbow. We then got the ferry over to Fraser Island. The view from the ferry was amazing and when we got on to the island and drove along the stretch of white sand it was incredible. It was called 75 mile beach and it did seem to stretch on forever...well at least 75 miles. We started off by heading to Lake Mackenzie, which was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever seen, crystal clear waters and white beaches, loved every second of it. We then headed to Explore Pile Valley and Central Station, a former forestry camp with huge satinay, scribbly gum, brush box and kauri trees. After that we did a two and a half mile Walk along the banks of Wanggoolba Creek which flows gently and silently through lush rainforest. It was mad because although it was hot outside it was very cool inside the rainforest.
We then headed back to the campsite which was surrounded by metal gates so as to stop the Dingo’s getting in. we got allocated a small tent and we put our stuff inside, the toilets were across the field so at night we had to walk down and up this hill to get to the loo in the pitch black. We had a bbq dinner which was really nice and we all sat on the benches drinking our goon,( I think out of the 20 odd of us we had about 15 boxes of goon between us) so that went down really well. We played drinking games which kept making me and char do shot after shot. And we sat talking to the guys all night. Sedat was very drunk and called me Jane and Charlene shiny. When I tried to explain how wrong he was he ended up with Jenni ....woop woop but then looked at char and called her Chenny ha ha not quite. Had a really good night with everyone and such a laugh with the guys, i was talking to them in Turkish and Nestor was teaching me Spanish. Both drivers were merry and joining in with us all, it really was a lot of fun. Also what made it that much better was when you looked up you could see the Milky Way, the stars were incredible and there was nothing blocking the view, it really was beautiful.
The following day we struggled but managed to get up for brekkie on time and packed all our stuff on the top of our 4x4. We headed to Lake Wabby where we had to walk for at least half an hour to get to the sand dunes, it was called A Trek over Hammerstone Sand Blow and swim in emerald-green Lake Wabby. There were guys on body boards going down the sand dunes and into the lake....was not nice to watch thought they were going to break their necks! We took lotsa pics with the guys in the water and there were fish so close to us and they were massive. Then we started our trek back, I walked along singing Rihanna’s s and m and behind me i can hear Sedat singing ooohh I likey likey that made me chuckle. I walked with Leo back and we talked about everything and anything and was really nice getting to know him. We then went on 75 mile beach and Nestor wrote all our countries in the sand together, it was really sweet.
We messed around there for a while before driving to Eli Creek (and seeing a dingo along the way) and paddling in the water before it flowed through the dunes and out to sea...you know I’m gonna say it was beautiful and amazing but I’ll say it again anyway..it was beautiful and amazing!! However Leo did go swimming with his phone in his pocket and needless to say it wasn’t in the best of states after. We then had lunch of wraps and ham, Luis (from mexico) struggled somuch with his wrap ...me and char said to himsurely you make them all the time in mexico...apparently not, they don’t even eat fajitas, nachos and tacos there!!! Lastly we drove along 75 mile beach to see the coloured sands of the Pinnacles and the wreck of the cruise ship Maheno.
Then it was home time....quite a long journey home when everyone was very tired, so we all fell asleep and at different points took pictures of each other asleep. When we got back we all hugged and said goodbye, had such a good two days and made some really good friends, so was very sad to leave everyone! The guys asked us if we wanted to join them for dinner but we were both knackered and in need of a good wash so we headed back to our halfway house after an incredible 2 days :)
