Our next day we had a long drive ahead, but with some pretty cool stops to break it up. We started to head north from Queenstown, first hitting Wanaka. It is not too dissimilar to Queenstown, but with less tourists. It was so picture perfect with the lakes and mountains surrounding it, we loved it.
We then headed on to our first real destination of the day, the Fox Glacier. We parked up and started our walk up to it, getting us to about 80 meters away. The sun has finally started shining so it was a lovely walk, with the rainforest and mountains around us.
We then headed on to Lake Matheson, where on a clear day you can see Mt Cook. Although it was a really good day, there was cloud hanging right over the mountain so unfortunately we couldn't see it! Disappointing, but still a nice walk around the lake.
Finally, we headed on to see Franz Josef, our final glacier for the day. This was a lot bigger than Fox and an excellent finale. With not much time left in the day we didn't make it to the closet point, but it isn't really necessary to go all the way. The scale of the glacier is pretty amazing and we would have loved to have walked on it if we had the money! Something for next time!
We were originally going to stay at Franz Josef for the night, but with high prices and the drive we had to do the next day, we decided to push on to be closer to our next destination. This brought us not far from Greymouth, staying in another conservation camp site. This was by far the nicest camp site we'd stayed at.
