The next morning we woke up ready and refreshed. After a hasty breakfast we started our drive south. We decided to break up the long drive down to the Otago Peninsula with a couple of stops. We based these purely on names (as you will be able to work out) and the first stop of the day was a little town called Geraldine.
The town is so quaint, with the loveliest people. We did some cheese tasting and got the chance to see the current holder of the Guinness World Record of the worlds largest jersey (that means jumper). We chatted to loads of the locals who were raising money to extend their village hall (we bought hot dogs to help out). We even bought some home made chutney from a granny.
Feeling sufficiently stuffed after our gourmet delights, we carried on south along the coast to head down to Shag Point.
Shag Point is a outcrop of land which houses a seal and penguin colony. The seals were all out, chilling on the rocks, playing and generally having a good time. The penguins were nowhere to be seen. Either way, it was definitely worth the stop for the seals alone - amazing how we manage to see wildlife on our first beach in New Zealand!
After leaving Shag Point, we started to panic slightly as we hadn't seen a petrol station for quite some time. The fuel needle was heading south faster than we were! With 50km left to Dunedin, the petrol light came on, but we were happy in our thinking that it had been so long since we saw a petrol station, one must be round the corner. After all, we were on the main highway down New Zealand!
Needless to say, we eventually nursed our way into Dunedin on fumes and filled up at a glorious Mobil station on the outskirts of the city. A warning to all - if your tank gets below halfway in New Zealand, fill it up! Who knows where the next station will be!
After that, we had a short stint left to drive out to the Otago Peninsula, and our camp site for the night. It was situated just off the harbour and it looked stunning, apart from the rain.
However, we woke up to glorious sunshine ready for the open road!
We headed out to the end of the peninsula where we found Albatross Point. We even managed to see a couple of Albatrosses while we were there. Sarah thinks that they are just big seagulls really.
Tom agrees.
