Driving down from Eungella National Park after a night at Explorer's Haven caravan park. We had hoped to camp at Fern Flats as we had done in '94 but the site was closed to car campers. The sugar cane haze gave us an orange-red full moon last night and a blood red sunrise this morning over an immense valley. We've left Airlie Beach after 2 days of being total tourists - Reefworld and a Long Island cruise. Weather against us - high swell. Off in search of the elusive Eungella Honeyeater ... Come on Grooms - where are you?

Forgot to mention my find of a pair of Great Bowerbirds at our coffee stop. They were just sitting in a nearby tree - lucky to notice lilac splodge on back of one's head which gives a positive ID! Really chuffed with this find. Is anyone out there? Comment if you are!

On our way from Mission Beach to Airlie Beach with the intention of doing a day cruise there. Mission Beach had changed heaps from when were last there - they have worked hard to keep open for tourists but the cyclone devastation is very evident. Almost no tropical fruits available (except the bananas I just bought at 5 for $1.00). Tim has had a ball here making dams across the nearby stream. His toe is healing nicely. 400km+ drive planned for today. We'll see ...
