We decided to tackle the long drive from kaikoura to abel tasman national park with no overnight stops. We drove from Rotorua to Taupo and on the way went to Wai-o-taupo thermal wonderland where we saw a geyser erupt, lots of bubbling mud pools, steaming ground, a steaming bubbling lake called the champagne pool and a bright yellow sulphor lake. We drove from Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel to Raglan on the West Coast. We had seen this place in the Lonely planet and fancied going there.
